São Paulo de Piratininga: “pirá” significa peixe em tupi-guarani. E, antes do Tietê (= rio caudaloso, volumoso) ser canalizado e perder toda a sua natureza, ele abrigou a vila de Anchieta.

The name of the city is, literally, Saint Paul of the Dry Fish (the word ‘fish’ being ‘pirá’). And, before the Tietê (= rich and volumous) river was piped up and lost its beautiful nature, it was the heart and soul of the small village founded by the Jesuit, José de Anchieta.
